The Birds Scare Katya

Here, as promised, are the shots of Katya doing her best "Melanie is shocked by the horror unfolding before her" impression.

The original:

And Katya's interpretation:

The Birds Scares Us!

Please allow the following images and videos to accentuate your enjoyment of Katya and I dissecting The Birds.

Kids running and screaming which is totally not funny.  Okay, maybe once.

Melanie's reaction.  Not funny.  Okay, maybe twice.

And now ... the hysterical hysteria of Veronica Cartwright:

Poor Kathy.

Invasion of the Body Snatchers.  (Click here to watch the scene.)

 Alien.

Witches of Eastwick.

The Birds Scares Us

Hello Dear Listeners,

Sorry for the delay this week!  We had many things happening and had some technical challenges.  Fear not!  We have returned to give you a reason to be afraid, even as we move through spring and into the sunny summer season.  Don't you all remember that horror in the daylight is real!?

Join Katya and Laramie as they discuss (and sing about) Alfred Hitchcock's The Birds. There is plenty to be afraid of in this one. Creepy movie directors, condescending lawyers, women breaking into houses to leave birds, birds that peck out eyes (so many eyes!!), if its bird or misogyny related this movie probably has it!!  Plus, Katya and Laramie discuss the horror of coming to terms with the bad behavior of artists we love.

Special shout outs to The Roxy Theater here in Missoula for screening The Birds, and our wonderful listener Lindsey C.!

Werewolves Scare Us

Here are some werewolves for your nerves.  If you'd like to learn more about the horrors of hybridity (which blogger doesn't even acknowledge is a word; what the hell), werewolves, or shapeshifters in general, please check out Episode 5 and  16.

Oliver Reed carries off the heroine in Hammer's The Curse of the Werewolf.

Dog Soldiers!  Brilliant.  The last werewolf movie that actually freaked me out.

David Kessler transforms into An American Werewolf in London, one of my first (and favorite) werewolves.

The horrors of The Howling!

An oldie but a goodie:  Lon Chaney's The Wolfman.

A deeply unsettling moment from The Company of Wolves.

One of the first, predating The Wolfman by a few years:  Henry Hull as The Werewolf of London.

Haunted Mirrors Scare Us

I took this picture in my brother's old bedroom last summer; there was no light except the flash from my camera.  Look closely into the mirror ... if you dare!

House Party Horror Scares Us

Clinkies Dear Listeners!!

Welcome to the house party episode of This Place Scares Us!  We don't know how your life has been, but spring time has been a bit too busy for all of us at TPSU.  So we decided to let our amazing hair down and have a house party!!

We brought our wonderful friends and family in to the This Place Scares Us Studio to hear their creepy stories.  Taylor (yes, the actually famous Taylor), Ryan (our amazing social media manager), Tori (of Silver Bullet Scares Us fame), and Amy and Aaron (our besties from Frame of Mind MT) join us to tell their scariest stories!

This episode was recorded during a house party so sound quality is a bit all over the place, and we were maybe a bit deep into our wine to keep things on a great track.  So, if this isn't your thing feel free to let us know. OR BETTER YET: write into us with your favorite creepy topic, ghost story, etc.

See you in two weeks for our episode on The Birds

We love you dear listeners,

The Possession of Anneliese Michel Scares Us

Hello Dear Listeners,

Are you enjoying the increasing daylight and all of the new life brought by spring?  Do you wish things were still dark and spooky?  Well fear not because we have a real scare fest for you this episode!  We are discussing a truly tragic case of demon possession (!!Warning!! we do play a clip from an actual exorcism in this episode).

The case of Anneliese Michel came about at the height of all things possession, The Exorcist, Rosemary's Baby, and The Omen were all released around the time of this tragic event.  So join us as we explore what was truly a tragic life, and a disturbing death with no clear answers.

Katya and Laramie do keep things fun in this episode, and give many listener shout-outs! (we love you) Laramie transports you to Germany courtesy of Baron Von Candy Corn, Katya admits (finally) that she: "is not science", plus you get to hear from Ryan our "Catholic On The Street".

Episode 15: London After Midnight

Visual reference from Episode 15:  Here's good ol' Lon Chaney (Sr.! father to Lon "I'm the Wolfman, Ask Me How" Chaney, Jr.) in London After Midnight, unfortunately lost to history.  The man was the king of horror makeup; wires around the eyes aside, you just know that those teeth could not have felt good.

The Horrors of Hybridity Scare Us

Hi Dear Listeners,

We are enjoying the slow transition to spring and are excited to be releasing a new episode to all of you.  There have been many changes in our lives and we are excited to share them with you!

In this episode Katya and Laramie talk about why werewolves, manitous, and any shape-shifter should scare you.  Hybrids are a common theme in horror and there is likely a larger context behind that.  Katya and Laramie talk about all of the ways that hybrids show up in the history of horror.  So come join us as we decide if werewolves are cannibals or not!

Also, Katya attempts tongue twisters and Laramie talks about his academic writing.

Episode 14: Marcus Wesson Scares (the shit out of) Us

Here he is.  Vampire Jesus.

Marcus Wesson Scares Us

Hi Dear Listeners,

We hope that things have been going well for you as we leave the doldrums of winter and emerge into spring.  We have had a busy couple of weeks here at This Place Scares Us, and honestly our schedules have been scaring us more than anything.  But we digress.

In this episode Katya and Laramie discuss the sad history of Marcus Wesson and his horrible abuse of everyone in his family.  Katya and Laramie bring a lot of humor to an otherwise disturbing topic talking about all of their new band names, vampire Jesus (really) and the difficulties of caring about reading.

We had a ton of fun on this episode (partly because Katya and Laramie got so drunk) and spend a bit of time shouting out some of our dear friends, family, and all of you wonderful listeners!  Thank you for all making us feel special.

Frankenstein Among the Dead Scares Us

Hi Dear Listeners,
We have had a few technical difficulties, and the end of winter was rather crazy for us!  Sorry for the delay in getting you such an exciting episode!  We will be getting back on our regular schedule and dropping another episode in two weeks!
In this episode we discuss all things Frankenstein!  Laramie published a play called Frankenstein Among the Dead (available for purchase at www.theatrefolk.com), and we watched The Bride of Frankenstein to have all the Frankenstein goodness to talk about.  Katya decides that Frankenstein is the saddest classic monster, and Laramie discusses the process of writing a dramatic adaptation.
We were really bummed to find out that some of our great discussion was lost to faulty recording.  We will try and find a way to update what was lost, but in the meantime there is lots to love about this episode!

If you too would like a copy of my play, Frankenstein Among the Dead, for your very own, please follow this link.  You'll love it.

Episode 12: The Horror that Befell the Gibbons Twins Scares Us!

Twins!  Twins!  My obsession with twins, as I referenced in Episode 11, led me to an obsession with ...

... evil Jeannie ...

... Serena ...

... and Cassandra ...

And oh yeah!  I figured out the name of that twin show sitcom from the 1980s!

Double Trouble, with the Sagal twins, Liz and Jean, who played Kate and Allison, which, after I figured it out, I totally remembered their character names.  And it was only one for a single season, so I'm super impressed that I remembered it at all.

But here's the actual focus of our episode ... June and Jennifer Gibbons, the so-called "Silent Twins."

And the book June wrote, The Pepsi-Cola Addict, that I would love to read ...

... and finally, follow this link to learn about a play, Speechless, which addresses the racism that the Gibbons twin faced in their small village in Wales.

Sad.  And spooky.  And sad.

The Tragic Tale of the Gibbons Twins Scares Us

Hi Dear Listeners,

Has the first month of the new year been all you wanted it to be?  Valentine's day is just around the corner and we decided to a share a tale of sisterly love tainted by the horrors of the world for this week's episode!

Join Katya and Laramie as they discuss the sadness that was the relationship of the Gibbons twins.  A truly Gothic tale tainted by the prejudice of people and the sadness that is poorly treated mental illness.  Also, learn about Laramie's new play (more on this coming next episode!).

We love you dear listeners and in all honesty this episode focuses on some heavy topics such as institutional and systemic racism, the horror that was mental health treatment in the 60s, 70s, and 80s and the sad ways in which people deal with the struggles of life.  February is said to be the worst month of the year, so hang in there everyone!

Tori's Magical Silver!

As referenced in recent episodes.

More About Why Suspiria Scares Us

Allow this post to accentuate your experience listening to Katya and me as we wax hilarious about the not-so-much-with-the-dancing ballerina witches and the exploits of the undercover coven (undercoven?) in Argento's Suspiria.

Let's start with the creepy-ass theme song by Goblin.  Check it out:

The stained glass that so impressed Katya.  With poor dead Pat.

Suzy by the irises.  I want to live in this room.

Why does this witch have to work in the kitchens?  Where'd she get that magical prism?  What's the deal with Joan Bennett's spooky nephew?  Plot points ... doesn't matter ... DOESN'T MATTER.

The girls in their makeshift dormitory.  Such red. All red.

More irises ("Turn the blue one!") and Joan "Madame Blanc" Bennett.

More Joan Bennett, looking amazing.

Check out the pins in Sarah's creepy dead eyes!

Witch stab!  (Look at those fingernails!)

Witch Stab, Part Deux.  Sayonara, Black Queen, Mother of Sighs!

WIIIIIIITCH!

Suspiria Scares Us

Hello Dear Listeners,

We hope you enjoyed our two part episode for episode 10! This week we are discussing the movie Suspiria. Released in 1977, Suspiria was directed by Dario Argento, and is the scariest movie that (maybe) shouldn't be scary.

Katya and Laramie talk all about how the inexplicable story of witches, ballerinas, and a ballet academy in the Black Forest of Germany create a story that will make your skin crawl. The use of sound, color, and fairy tale like story all play a part in this horror classic Also, Katya talks about how she would dress up various germs and diseases (no really) and Laramie coins a new term for witch snacks!

We sincerely hope the new year is treating you well!

A Little Taste of What's to Come ... (New Episode Premiering January 28th!)

So we'll be looking at ...

... witches!  No, not nice witches like Samantha, but wicked witches ...

...more wicked than Serena, even.

Maybe more like Angelique.  Or not, though Joan Bennett is involved ...

... or Dark Willow (who is emphatically not a Black Eyed Kid) ...

Yeah, that's closer.

Episode 11 debuts January 28th.
